parts of guitar
There are many different parts or components to a guitar but the essential ones to know as a beginner are shown in the following diagram:

string names
There are 6 strings on a guitar. They are named by either the note they make - E, A, D, G, B, E - going from thickest to thinnest, or using numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - thinnest to thickest:

E/6th
A/5th
D/4th
G/3rd
B/2nd
e/1st
Here are a couple of useful mnemonics to help remember the string names:
Elephants
And
Donkeys
Grow
Big
Ears
Eddie
Ate
Dynamite
Good
Bye
Eddie
As there are two E strings we refer to the thick one as low or bottom E and the thin one as high or top E. This relates to their pitch as opposed to physical position.
